Wokingham Borough Council hit the major national newspapers and TV thanks to their announcement that they would force through a highly unpopular 20Mph limit and cycleway together with some double yellow lines on Woodlands Avenue in Woodley and Culver Lane in Earley. Readers may remember that a version of this cycleway (without the limit) was consulted on in 2022 when Conservatives ran the council. The stark difference is that we said that if people were against the scheme, we wouldn't progress it, and when they made their feelings clear, we decided to scrap it.

Cue the Lib Dems, who rolled a scheme out for a similar route in late 2025, consulted on it, and then totally ignored the strong objections from 60% of Earley respondents and 69% of those in Woodley who said that they were against the proposals. Not content with that, they announced the decision with a crass banner headline "you said we did", that headline would have been better expressed as "You said you didnt want it we did it anyway". Finally they lashed out at residents saying "'Consultation feedback informed the decision, but consultations are not votes and do not determine outcome by majority rule."

Unbelievable! The arrogant dismissal of residents' concerns has been likened by some residents to living under a Lib Dem dictatorship.
